Biography - The Honourable Peter MacKay, PC, QC
As co-founder of the modern Conservative Party of Canada, Peter MacKay brought together Conservatives from across Canada under one national big blue tent in 2003, which led to forming government for almost 10 years in 2006.
He has fulfilled a number of key senior roles, including the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Canada’s second longest serving Minister of National Defence.
Peter spent 18 years (1997-2015) serving the citizens of Central Nova as their Member of Parliament. Prior to entering public life, he was as a Crown prosecutor in Nova Scotia. He is a current partner in the Toronto office of the Baker McKenzie law firm.
With his corporate and public service experience and living in both rural and urban communities, Peter understands how the country is growing, its changing demographics, the similarities and differences between rural and urban communities and how we must bridge the two in terms of providing services and solutions.
He believes in having a smaller and more-efficient government with the ability to respond to challenges, not insert unnecessary government bureaucracy that’s slows down the economy; as well, he believes in the private sector generating wealth, opportunity, growth and jobs.
Peter MacKay's vision is one for the country as a whole. It is a vision of national unity, economic growth, greater prosperity, strengthened security, preserving our place on the world stage, and respecting our provinces and territories, the cornerstones of our federation. With this vision for Canada, Peter believes that we can show all Canadians what it means – what it has always meant – to be a Canadian Conservative.
